When I was 12 years old I didn't know any of these things, yet from that age until my mid-thirties I was part of every one of these statistics. 

 

I’m Barbara Pratt and my simple approach to creating life-long health and well-being has been improving the lives of thousands of people for years.  Starting with me.

 

I Floundered for 23 Years

 

As a child I was pretty skinny and I thought of myself as skinny until one day when I was 12 years old and just starting 8th grade, Sister Georgene looked at me and said "I see you gained some weight over the summer." 

 

I went home from school that day and weighed myself - 115 pounds. Now I had no idea how much a 5'6" athletic 12-year old girl should way but I was sure NO ONE should ever weigh more than 100 pounds! 

 

Looking back it's obvious I wasn't even fat then, but that didn't matter.  I felt fat and I saw myself as fat and I judged myself for being fat ... and those thoughts and feelings began to dominate my life.  From that moment, without even realizing it, my dreams for my life went on the back burner and decades of dieting and food obsession began

 

No One Knew.

 

On the outside, my life looked pretty perfect  (binge-eaters tend to be high-achievers, I found out later).  I had a good job, good friends, and a good marriage.  I was fun to be with, successful, even admired.  But inside I was struggling with all this.  I kept tying my self-esteem to my body and my dieting.  My ever-growing history of diet and exercise failures was sad and exhausting.

 

I started doing everything I could to control my weight.  For the first 8 years I tried almost every diet that came out - grapefruit diets, protein shake diets, fasting, grueling exercise regimes, "lose 10 pounds by Friday" diets and so on.  

 

Over the course of those years I began to realize that my issues with my weight were abnormal. 

 I started into therapy in my mid-twenties and was diagnosed as being bulimic.  Over the next several years I tried private therapy, group therapy, behavior therapy, drug therapy and Overeaters Anonymous ...  while also trying still more diets and programs.

 

I kept trying too much, too fast, so I quit, and I hated myself for quitting.  And

 

This whole time I was just waiting ...

 

I kept postponing the important things I wanted in my life.  As soon as I was thin enough ... then I'd do new things.  My thinking was always, "After I lose weight, after I get fit, after I ...  whatever - then I'll be happy!"

In my early thirties I finally got to a point where I just got fed up. Controlling my weight wasn't working for me.  In fact, after each attempt I usually felt worse, either right away when I 'failed' to stick with it ,or afterwards when the weight came back on. 

 

Somewhere deep inside me I knew, "This is stupid, Barb. Don't do this to yourself.  You deserve better than this pain and frustration and the last thing you need is another reason to feel badly about yourself." 

 

There HAD to be a better way ... but there wasn't! 

 

No one and nothing had the answers  I was seeking.  No one was paying attention to the Big Picture -  my whole LIFE!  - not just my shape or my weight. 

 

My 'Ah Ha' moment came when I recognized this:  My body was NOT the problem! 

 

My body's shape and weight were only symptoms of the problem.  The real problem was I was living a lifestyle that was damaging my health -  I was stressed,  I was under-fulfilled,  I felt distant in many of my relationships,   I had trouble sleeping. .. and I had a nagging dissatisfaction with myself for all these things.

 

My body was the conscious and unconscious target of all that and so I was chronically tired, unfocused, and had low-energy.  Sure I could always turn myself 'On' when I needed to get something done, to complete a special project, to do well at work, and so on ... but since I lacked fundamental energy and vitality I would then need periods where I turned myself 'Off' to recover and recuperate.

 

In my 'Off' times I stopped exercising and I overate.  These behaviors added extra pounds and lowered my metabolism even further.

 

At Last the Puzzle Pieces All Fit Together 

 

If I wanted a changed body, I couldn't isolate that one part of me anymore.  I needed to get healthy in all areas of my life.  This is much bigger than just size, shape and fitness - this is a whole new definition of health.  And the amazing thing is, when I started focusing on this much bigger picture - everything got simpler , easier, and more fun and rewarding!
